Question #3 Week of February 8, 2011

How should gifted students be identified for the gifted cluster group?

  1. This is a tough nut to crack when dealing with the primary grades. These students have not been tested formally for the most part. I think the inventories provided in the gifted cluster manual, the teacher nomination forms or the KOA book would be a good tool to use. This is not very useful in kindergarten though. Here, there needs to be flexibility the first week or so of school to give teachers time to use the aforementioned inventories.

  2. As Tony said, it may be more difficult in the primary grades. Using tools, such as inventories and things provided in the gifted cluster manual, will be helpful. Bertie Kingore has some great tools, in providing choices differentiating between the gifted learner and the bright child.
